PRASHANT^TM foot valve is true friend of your pump. Foot - Valve is generally placed at the bottom of the suction pipe of centrifugal pump to prevent the suction pipe from emptying while pump set is at rest.

When the pump is started because of foot valve the Suction pipe is not to be re primed thereby instant flow of water is possible which alienate the most of burden of pump from uplifting the water or any fluid. Where the delivery pressure is high (i.e. more than 20 meters) it is recommended to install a check valve in the discharge Line. The check valve should be placed near the pump to protect the pump from excessive back pressure to 

prevent the water running back through the pump incase sudden failure of prime movers.
Nut - Bolt Check Valve (NRV) can be used horizontally as well as vertically.
